This weekend we successfully renewed, repainted, and re-energized the Boston School of Boabom! Fresh paint and positive energies always do a school good, and we had plenty! We were even able to use a zero-VOC paint (we used one called FreshAire, bur there are many others available), so the school and its air will be clean and healthy for all of us!

So thanks to everyone who came and helped out–you made the weekend fly by, and with so much help we were able to finish earlier than we expected!!!

It speaks of leaving the system (herd) to work with the system “mama net” (mother nature).

Economics today is maybe the most influential discipline in our world. Ideas like money, offer, demand, and so many deeply affect our lives. Investigating the basic economic principles is an interesting task, because it may shed light on our society.

If we read any economics book, it says that this knowledge builds upon a basic problem: that there is always more demand than goods to satisfy it. Given this essential shortage, we need a way of producing and managing these goods to satisfy our needs in the best way possible.

A quick glance at our surrounding seems to support this shortage theory. It seems like there are always more hungry than food, more people than nice houses, more cars than parking spots in the centre of town, etc. This idea has been accepted, and it has constituted as a fundamental column of the contemporary economy theory, upon which lies the functioning of financial systems, banks, and even ourselves.

The idea of the free market is justified by this concept of shortage. It states that as there are more needs than resources, competition to acquire them is naturally generated; every person should fight for their own needs. This fighting will make each individual more competent, which will benefit the society as a whole… but at what cost? Many have argued whether the free market is a good way of organizing society. What I would like to set out is a more basic question, about the shortage theory and free market fundamentals.

Is it true that there is always more demand than goods? Must it be that way? I would like to leave this question open, to let each meditate on it. Instead of giving a particular answer to it, we will see the consequences of considering the shortage theory as undisputedly true, as economists usually do.

Assuming shortage theory as a fundamental statement, economics has centered its attention on the production capacity of goods. It looks for ways of producing more goods with less effort, overcoming a little bit the eternal imbalance between needs and resources. As a consequence of this we see massive production methods and industrial farm systems, to mention just a few.

When the focus of attention is directed solely at goods, the nature of our needs have been forgotten. In this idea of shortage is implicit that any need is valid and should be satisfied, because it stimulates the production and the movement of labor. An uncritical vision of need has opened the world to free manipulation by publicity media, which does nothing more than generate new artificial needs. This generates human beings who are full of needs, creating a never-ending appetite.

Meditation on these ideas can have effects on our daily life. For example, a person focused on shortage concepts is used to thinking in this way: “I’ll always have less money than I would like to spend, and because of this I should only worry about how to get the most money possible; it will never be too much.” This mentality, very common in our days, is very harmful, because it makes people slaves of work that provides money. It turns into overwork, and this into stress and illness.

I propose that we look into what are real needs are, and which ones are just whims or artificially created. If we are able to return to our real needs we’ll take an important step into balance and peace in our lives, getting away from consumption craziness and a never-ending race. I don’t mean to imply that one must live in poverty with the strictest minimum required for survival; I simply suggest that a profound revision of our real needs may have an important effect over our personal economy, which is a huge part of our lives.

Personally I am supporter of enjoying simple and natural things. Many likes move us away from ourselves, making us dependent on artificial and expensive things, like the latest model car or newest fashions. Other practices, like Boabom, teach us to enjoy the most simple and important things we have. Boabom classes show us how to enjoy the movement, coordination, inner rhythm, agility and dexterity of which we are capable within our own body. We learn to value simple things like breathing, which is something we too often take for granted. Instead any good Boabom student knows how good a profound breath can feel, in the middle of an intense class! It can feel greater than the most expensive and refined delicacies of the world!!!

Boabom helps us to enjoy more about ourselves. It guides us toward liking what we are and being what we like. This frees us from false economic needs, and helps us to recover our personal way. Recovering the capacity to enjoy the natural things, we achieve a simpler and more balanced life.

The Boabom arts teach us to take care of our energy and the energy of those who surround us. The Boabom practice makes us feel as if a flame is lit inside ourselves, which fills us with vitality, confidence, health and joy. As classes continue this flame keeps growing and becomes stronger and deeper.

Simultaneously we start recognizing that each thing has its own shape and energy. As we realize this we make ourselves more conscious and respectful. This is particularly intense in our relation with the nature: we became more connected with her and her diverse shapes, full of strength and beauty. In this way we can leave behind the opinion which says that our planet is no more than a hunk of rock floating in outer space, and begin to feel her as something huge and unfathomable, which receives us in herself.

Reflecting on this, we realize that everything that we can do depends directly from our planet and the resources she gives us. Our tools, the house in which we live in, and even our own body, are all made only of her materials. Because of this we are bound entirely to her, and the use that we give to these resources will inevitably rule our fate.

We don’t need to emphasize how bad mankind is at managing this wonderful source of materials and possibilities. It is like a warehouse full of superior ingredients left in the hands of a group of monkeys, which, instead of using them to build wonderful things, disorganize and break them all.

This, which happens to the planet today, also happens to the bodies of many people. The human body is one of the most wonderful artefacts that has ever existed on this planet, which itself is capable of immense wonders. Instead of this we see how most people neglect it, don’t feed it properly, fill it with bad habits and illness. This is the consequence of a negative mentality, but it can be changed, starting with small things. We can see how the development of the Boabom Arts fills the body with great energy and vitality, cleaning and tuning it to a great condition. Boabom is a nourishment, a vitamin capable of transforming the body into the wonderful thing it was always meant to be.

A question that follows is this: as there exists an art that revitalizes the body, shall there not exist an art that may revitalize the planet? A planetary Boabom?

It seems that such a initiative is just beginning. Many people are becoming aware of the current situation and are beginning to take action. This can be seen in different things, from the strong growth of natural and organic ways of cultivating and eating, to the growth of many who look toward new and better ways of living.

The idea is that each person continues to grow in consciousness, and begins to make little adjustments in his daily life. If each one brings a grain of sand, very soon we may build a beach. Today I would like to present to you a simple and concrete thing you can do: use the internet search engine http://www.blackle.com. As you may notice, almost every internet search engine has a white background, which spends a great amount of electric energy in keeping the screen on as we search over the web. To change this Blackle was created: a black version of Google, the very same search engine with a back color. This change generates a big energy savings among the users of the page. If you look carefully in the home page, it says, below the search bar, “xxx Watt hours saved”. This measures the amount of energy saved to that moment. When this article was written this amount was estimated at 1,386,239.953 Watt hour, which is more or less the energy used by a 100 Watts light bulb turned on for 13 thousand hours!!!

So I invite every journal reader to save energy using Blackle. Besides, a black search engine has a lot of style, and one which will be enjoyed by every Boabom student!!
